Making a Planning Application

Link to the Planning Portal

Braintree District Council’s preferred method for the submission of planning applications is online, via the Planning Portal.  The Planning Portal allows you to fill in application forms and certificates, attach drawings, pay the application fee, and send your application to the Council over the Internet.  Please note that plans need to be in PDF format.  Detailed help and advice is available on the Planning Portal to help you with each stage of your online planning submission.

All planning application needs a site location plan and block plan showing the location and boundaries of the site. The Planning Portal have created a 'What to Submit' Best Practice Guide to identify the types of plans required with planning applications, and how to mark them correctly. The Planning Portal also provides a 'Buy a Plan' service to ensure that you meet the requirements. Click here for the link to the Planning Portal’s "Buy a Plan."

Alternatively, it is still possible to submit planning applications in writing.  Application Forms along with associated Guidance Notes are available on the website to download and to assist you in completing the relevant application form. In addition, packs of application forms are available at the Planning Desk within main reception at Causeway House, during normal office hours. Braintree District Council publishes a Scale of Charges, which details what planning fee is required for each type of application.

Prior to submitting a planning application, you should check to make sure you need Planning Permission for your proposal.  If you do need planning permission, there are a number of things that you can do to help us to deal with your planning application more efficiently:

- Discuss your proposals with us before you make your application. Follow this link to the Planning Advice Web Page to find the most suitable way to discuss your proposal.

- Check the guidance notes and Validation Checklist supplied with application forms to make certain we have all the right information;

- Quote the application reference number and/or the site address when you contact us.
