If you are considering extending or altering your property you
may need planning permission. It is important that you
make sure you have the relevant consents in place prior to starting
work. To determine whether planning permission or
Building Regulation approval is required for specific building
works or alterations please visit
the The Planning
Portal web site.
Permitted Development
Certain
alterations and extensions to houses and bungalows can be
carried out without the need to apply for planning permission. This
is known as 'Permitted Development'. Please note
that Permitted Development does not apply to flats,
maisonettes, mobile homes or residential caravans. For more
information on permitted development please click on the

Interactive Guides
The type of extensions and alterations that can be carried out as
Permitted Development will depend on whether you live in a
detached or terraced property. The Planning Portal has developed an
Interactive House and
Interactive
Terrace to provide a visual guide to the Planning and Building
Regulations for householders. It provides some
basic guidance on whether you need planning permission or Building
Regulation approval. Please note that you will need Flash
and Adobe on your PC.
The Planning
Portal also provides planning and building regulations guidance
for many common building work projects including:-
- Conservatories
-
Extensions
- Loft
conversions
- Outbuildings
- Porches
-
Works to Patios and Driveways
BEWARE
Even if you meet the conditions you may still need
permission if:
- permitted development rights were removed on the
original planning permission preventing extensions/additional
buildings. Phone for details.
- You live in a Conservation Area
- You live in Silver End Conservation Area
- The property is a Listed Building. Separate listed
building consent will be required.
Remember - you will always need to check if you require a
separate Building Regulation
consent.
