Silver End Conservation Area *


Silver End was founded by Francis H Crittall and built between 1926 and 1932 to house workers at Crittall’s factory. The village was planned as a model village and is nationally recognised as an important example of modern architecture and planning. In order to conserve and enhance the village, a Conservation Area was designated in 1983, followed by an Article 4 Direction.

What is a Conservation Area?
Within Conservation Areas, further planning controls apply in addition to the normal planning and listed building controls. Permission is required for:-

- The demolition of buildings over 115 cubic metres
- The extension of the original house by more than 50 cubic metres or 10% whichever is greater
- Erection of garages, sheds, greenhouses or other outbuildings over 10 cubic metres
- Felling and lopping of trees
- Cladding of houses
- Installation of a satellite dish on the front of a house

What is an Article 4 Direction?
An article 4 Direction introduces greater planning control over alterations and extensions to houses.

What requires planning permission?
The following developments require planning permission:-
- Side and front extensions
- Garages and outbuildings to the front and side of a house
- New or replacement front or side porches
- Alteration or erection of fences, walls or gates to the front or side of a house
- Construction of a vehicular hardstanding
- Creation of a vehicular access from any road
- Satellite dishes on the front of houses

Planning permission is also required for alterations:-
Replacement windows or doors in the front or side elevation Insertion of dormers or windows into roofs Changes in roof materials on pitched roof houses Cladding or rendering of front or side walls Painting of the exterior walls of a house

Listed Building Consent
In addition some properties are listed buildings and required Listed Building Consent for works affecting the character or appearance of the inside or outside of the property. This includes 1-32 Silver Street, Le chateau, Wolverton, Craig Angus and Boars Tye Farmhouse.
