BRAINTREE DISTRICT MUSEUM
The archive is part of the Braintree District Museum. A visit to
the archive wouldn’t be complete without popping into the museum in
Manor Street, to discover the important role Braintree has played
in the development of Britain’s textile industry. Located in the
old school building the museum’s Threads of Time tells the
story of this area’s textile heritage from the medieval wool trade
through to the fabrics produced in the town by Warner and
Courtaulds. By creativity and skill, the people in this part of
Essex produced fabrics for State occasions, curtains and upholstery
fabrics for some of the most important houses and churches in the
country and led the world in the development of man-made textiles
during the twentieth century. The museum occasionally arranges
temporary exhibitions with a textile theme.
Telephone 01376 325266 for information about opening times and
exhibitions.
