Project Profile

The role of the Braintree Community Sports Project is to use the power of sport as a means of engaging young people into a meaningful environment that is able to provide another area of focus in their lives, positive encouragement and support. With this engagement comes a range of issues that can be attached to young people from alcohol and drug use to issues around communication and leadership. The project looks to address these issues through informal education that takes place through the volunteers and the partner agencies that the project links with e.g. EYPDAS, Youth Service

Through these sport sessions the project look to address issues of self-esteem, self-confidence and feelings of self-worth. This is done through the use of sport itself and through the intervention of the volunteers who attend the session.

Through sport the young people are involved in an activity that require skills of team work, communication, responsibility and an inner desire to succeed that are transferable skills needed to succeed in life as well as having benefits around health and fitness of individuals. These values are actively promoted during the sessions which then link and impact on issues such as self respect and respect for others.

The sessions are also attended by volunteers from the community. The volunteers act as representatives of the project and are an integral part in how the project is run. Although with any new session a full time member of staff from the project will be there to over see the initial first few sessions the progression is to then allow the volunteers to lead the session to take an active role in developing their local community. This also allows for positive relationships to develop between young people and members of the community involving trust and respect from both sides.

In reference to the particular in-sessions at the schools the main focus of staff would be in the form of the full time members of staff at the project.

Means Of Access

The project is accessed through a number of agencies that refer young people to the project.

These include

Behaviour Support

Pupil Referral Unit

Youth Offending Team

Youth Service.

These links are continually developing and the project is willing to work closer with the local schools in the area to target particular individuals who would benefit from such an activity.

The project is also accessed directly by the young people in terms of turning up at the sessions and becoming involved in the activities that are taking place.
