A model of the Lyon

In 1632 the Lyon set sail from London, destined for the New World. On board were many passengers from Braintree and the surrounding region who were emigrating in search of a new life across the Atlantic, free from the religious intolerance and economic hardships of seventeenth century England.

Essex and the Lyon

In 1981 the local historian Winifred Ashwell published a 33-page booklet entitled Essex and the 'Lyon' which brought together the author's research into the vessel, the passengers and the land to which they sailed.
