Castle Hedingham in Braintree District is famous for two things
– its Norman castle and the distinctive pottery created in the area
by Edward Bingham in the late nineteenth century. Castle Hedingham
ware is easily recognised by two elements – its glaze and its
highly decorated surfaces. The most common colours used were blue,
green and brown, and all forms were either thrown on the wheel or
hand-built using slabs of clay.
By 1906, Edward Bingham's family firm had ceased production as
the whole family had gradually emigrated to America, but the
company's creations had made a significant impact on nineteenth
century pottery styles, and put the Hedingham area on the map as a
centre for distinctive and creative ceramics.
