Photographic evidence is an excellent resource
for bringing local history to life, and Braintree
District Museum possesses a large and important collection
comprising snapshots of the District's people and places from
the 1880s to the present day. These illustrate local
industry, street views, schools and public life, with particularly
interesting topics including:
- Local views of Braintree and Bocking collected by Alf
Whybrow. An important collection of photographs by Edgar Tarry
Adams including Halstead.
- An important series documenting the wartime work of the
Crittall factories, containing atmospheric images of women workers
of the First World War.
- A good collection relating to Black Notley
Hospital.
- A fascinating selection of aerial views of Braintree,
illustrating the town's urban development during the late 1980s and
early 1990s.
