BDC have partnered with British Gas to offer residents of the
Braintree District, heavily subsidised loft and cavity wall
insulation for their own homes and privately rented
accommodation.
In an uninsulated house built before 1990, it has been proven
that almost 25% of the heat loss from the building is through the
roof. By installing loft insulation this can reduce that heat loss
substantially.
Modern day Building Regulations require such a small amount of
heat loss through the roof that it is not uncommon for builders to
install 250mm (10") of loft insulation nowadays.
About 40% of the heat is lost through uninsulated cavity walls.
By installing cavity wall insulation that heat loss can be
halved.
Cavity Wall Insulation is very much established and is now a
common method of improving the thermal properties of walls of
buildings. Indeed the Building Regulations in recent years have
raised the requirements so much, that it is rare now for a new
built property not to have cavity wall insulation.
All the installation works are done to a British Board of
Agrément standard and every installation has an independent 25 year
guarantee backed by the Cavity Installation Guarantee Agency
(CIGA).
These measures result in a warmer home and reduced energy bills!
However the main benefit is that less energy has to be used to heat
the property and that means less fossil fuels are being burnt
either directly in the house or at the power station and the
subsequent greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.
If you are in receipt of an income related benefit there are
100% grants available for these measures.
