Latest News - Refuse & Recycling Collections

Our small (caged vehicle) is still off the road having suffered a serious breakdown.  In the meantime we are borrowing vehicles from neighbouring District Councils but this inevitably means that there is still the potential for disruption to services and late collections in narrow access roads while our own vehicle is being repaired.

This may mean that we have to collect your refuse or recycling later in the day or possibly the next day following your scheduled collection day.   Please leave your bin and/or clear sacks out until they are collected.  We thank you for bearing with us - we will collect as soon as we can.

STOP PRESS Wed 17 March 2010: small vehicle up-to-date on collections today EXCEPT for Eagle Lane, Braintree which will be collected tomorrow Thurs 18 March.

The New Refuse & Recycling Collection Service

The new refuse and recycling collection service has now been introduced. The vast majority of the District is now on the wheeled bin system, which has been so successful in increasing recycling rates and which now includes food waste recycling, and all the new collection routes have been implemented. Many thanks to everyone for bearing with us while we've been working to deliver the new service. Once the new service has settled down, we expect it to deliver increased recycling rates (projected to reach nearly 50% by end of year), less waste going to landfill and greater service efficiency.

If you are having problems with the new collections or have not received your bins or your new collection calendar, please call the Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525 and we'll be happy to help.

Frequently asked questions:

Q. Why have you changed the service?

A. This is the biggest change we have made to the refuse and recycling service in many years. One of our main priorities is to help the District stay clean and green. These changes are the next steps in achieving this.  The collection routes have been rerouted to collect waste and recycling in a more efficient way which will save fuel, CO2 emissions and money.  The wheeled bins and food waste caddies have been rolled out to the entire District to further  increase recycling rates and minimise the waste going to landfill.

Q. I haven't received my wheeled bins yet. What do I do in the meantime?

A. We've now completed the bin delivery schedule so if you still haven't had your bins delivered please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk as soon as possible and we'll get the bins to you. In the meantime please put your refuse out in black sacks on your new "grey bin days" and your recycling out in clear sacks on your "green bin days" until you receive your bins. Click on the link in the Useful Links box to check your refuse and recycling collection dates.

Q. I haven't received my kitchen caddy, when will these be delivered?

A. If you are on the wheeled bin scheme and didn't receive a caddy, please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk and we'll send one to you.

Q. I'm on a black sack collection but have received a kitchen caddy. What do I do with it as I don't have a green bin to put my food waste in?

A. You shouldn't have received the caddy but if you'd like to hold on to it and use it for your home composting please do so. If you would like us to collect the caddy from you please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk. For information, we are looking at the possibility of providing food waste recycling collections for households unsuitable for wheeled bins in the future so look out for more information in our regular Recycling Newsletters.

Q. I would like to request more clear recycling sacks.

A. You can collect more sacks free of charge from your local Library or the Council Office at Causeway House, Braintree or email us at csc@braintree.gov.uk or call the Clear Sack Request Line on 0800 074 8243.

Q. ! requested the small 140 litre wheeled bins but I've received the standard size ones instead.

A. As an interim measure, we had to deliver the standard size bins due to a problem with the supply of the small bins.  Residents who requested the small bins will have them swapped over as soon as we have stocks of them. At the moment the small bins are expected in late November so we should be able to start deliveries then.
