Special Collections for large items of Household waste *

BDC offer a Special Collection service for large items of household waste.

In wheeled bin collection areas, large items are those that do not or cannot be fitted into the grey wheeled bin.

In black sack collection areas, large items are those that weigh more that 25kgs or cannot fit into a black sack.

In all areas, all electrical items now have to be collected as hazardous waste.  For more information please click here.

How long will I have to wait?

Because large items of furniture, etc can be an eyesore or an obstruction when left in gardens.  A special collection route system is in place to tell exactly what day items will be collected.

How can I request a special collection?

Call the Council on 01376 552525.  Leave address collection details and information on the items to be collected. 

How much does it cost?

The cost is dependant on the amount of waste that is collected.

- Up to 6 individual items £23.50

- Over 6 up to 12 items £47.00

- No more than 12 items can be collected

50% discount for people on income related benefit. (proof will be required)

N.B.Cheques must be sent before collection.

How to dispose of items that cannot be collected on the service?

All items mentioned in the document above (except for tyres, asbestos and clinical waste) can be removed if a skip is hired.

What will the Council take?

-         All household furniture

-         Any electrical appliances, including fridges and freezers for CFC removal

-         Push  bikes

-         Wood (depending on quantity)

-         Carpets

-         Sheets of glass (broken glass to be safe container)

-         Empty water tanks (depending on size and location of the tank)

-         Garden machinery

-         Metal

-         Gas fires

-         Bathroom suites

-         Dismantled sheds and coal bunkers (providing that it is not a skip load)

 

Items the special collection service can not take?

-         Bricks and rubble

-         Any quantity of garden waste

-         Trees and bushes

-         Sheds and coal bunkers still intact

-         Full water tanks, or empty tanks where there is no easy access

-         Car / motorbike parts

-         Bags of concrete

-         Tyres

-         Significant quantities of waste food

-         Commercial, industrial or clinical waste

-         House clearances

-         Loose material requiring excessive handling

-         Materials in such quantities as would warrant the hire of a skip

-         ASBESTOS

-         Garage doors

-         Oil tanks
