SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT  - SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

STOP PRESS!  There is an error on all the new collection calendars that have just been sent out.  If you have just received your new calendar please recycle it - you will receive your correct one (labelled version 2) within the next few weeks (31/08/10).

August Bank Holiday Collections: for the week following the Bank Holiday all collections will be one day late. You can check the exact dates by clicking this link.

The next Black Sack distribution will take place in September/October rather than August as previously advised. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Wheeled Bins

On the day of collection please make sure the correct bin and/or clear recycling sacks are put out at your collection point (normally the front boundary of your property) no later than 7:00am on the morning of collection but no earlier than the evening before.

Be aware of where you put your bin/clear sacks out on collection day so that they do not cause an obstruction.  Our collection crews are instructed to replace bins back to where they were collected from so please position your bins carefully.

Return your bin to the inside of your boundary as soon as possible after collection.  Between collections your wheeled bins/clear sacks must be stored within the boundary of your property.

Please do not put additional refuse or garden waste on top or by the side of your bin.  The collection crews have been instructed to report households putting out excessive waste and those households will be contacted by the Recycling Team with information on recycling.  If you think your household qualifies for a larger grey bin, please call the Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk for an application form.

If you have problems moving your bins and there is no-one else in the household physically capable of putting your bins out for collection (for example, if you are elderly or have a medical/physical condition), we may be able to provide you with an assisted collection whereby the crews will collect the bin from where you are able to use it, empty it and return it to you.  Please call the Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk for an application form.

Missed collection?

Households on fortnightly black sacks collections

There is a very small number of households unable to have the wheeled bins (generally terraced houses that front directly onto the pavement or highway and which have no rear access at all).  If this applies to you, you will have received a letter confirming this and a supply of black sacks for your refuse which you should put out at the front of your property on "grey bin" days.  Your clear recycling sacks should be put out on "green bin" days.  Unfortunately at the moment we have no way of collecting garden or food waste from these properties as we can only collect this material in the green wheeled bins.  However we are in the process of looking at ways of including these households in the green waste collections which will be publicised as soon as the details are confirmed.

Flats

Blocks of flats normally have a bin store or a number of bin stores depending on the number of flats, usually situated in the car park area.  Some are for the storage of black sacks and some have bulk bins installed which the Management Company has supplied for the containment of refuse within the bin store.  If this applies to you, please ensure your black sacks are placed within the bin store or within the bulk bins if bins have been supplied.  The bin stores/bulk bins are emptied on a regular basis by our bulk bin vehicles.

Your clear sacks of recycling should be put out at the front boundary of the property (near the roadside) by 7:00am on the day of collection but no earlier than the evening before.  Unless there is a special bin store for recycling only, you will need to store your recycling in your flat between collections.  Some blocks of flats have allocated one of the bin stores for recycling only.  If this applies to you, please put your clear sacks of recycling in the correct bin store or place your recycling in the appropriate recycling bin.  The recycling bins are emptied on a regular basis by our recycling bank vehicles.  For more information on recycling for flats please click here.

The New Refuse & Recycling Collection Service

The new refuse and recycling collection service has now been introduced. The vast majority of the District is now on the wheeled bin system, which has been so successful in increasing recycling rates and which now includes food waste recycling, and all the new collection routes have been implemented. Many thanks to everyone for bearing with us while we've been working to deliver the new service. Once the new service has settled down, we expect it to deliver increased recycling rates (projected to reach nearly 50% by end of year), less waste going to landfill and greater service efficiency.

If you are having problems with the new collections or have not received your bins or your new collection calendar, please call the Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525 and we'll be happy to help.

Frequently asked questions:

Q. Why have you changed the service?

A. This is the biggest change we have made to the refuse and recycling service in many years. One of our main priorities is to help the District stay clean and green. These changes are the next steps in achieving this.  The collection routes have been rerouted to collect waste and recycling in a more efficient way which will save fuel, CO2 emissions and money.  The wheeled bins and food waste caddies have been rolled out to the entire District to further  increase recycling rates and minimise the waste going to landfill.

Q. I haven't received my wheeled bins yet. What do I do in the meantime?

A. We've now completed the bin delivery schedule so if you still haven't had your bins delivered please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk as soon as possible and we'll get the bins to you. In the meantime please put your refuse out in black sacks on your new "grey bin days" and your recycling out in clear sacks on your "green bin days" until you receive your bins. Click on the link in the Useful Links box to check your refuse and recycling collection dates.

Q. I haven't received my kitchen caddy, when will these be delivered?

A. If you are on the wheeled bin scheme and didn't receive a caddy, please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk and we'll send one to you.

Q. I'm on a black sack collection but have received a kitchen caddy. What do I do with it as I don't have a green bin to put my food waste in?

A. You shouldn't have received the caddy but if you'd like to hold on to it and use it for your home composting please do so. If you would like us to collect the caddy from you please contact us on 01376 552525 or csc@braintree.gov.uk. For information, we are looking at the possibility of providing food waste recycling collections for households unsuitable for wheeled bins in the future so look out for more information in our regular Recycling Newsletters.

Q. I would like to request more clear recycling sacks.

A. You can collect more sacks free of charge from your local Library or the Council Office at Causeway House, Braintree or email us at csc@braintree.gov.uk or call the Clear Sack Request Line on 0800 074 8243.
