WALL.E Competition

On the 16th October, Cllrs Wendy Schmitt and Robert Mitchell presented remote controlled Wall.E robots to six primary school children for their winning drawings of their own environmentally friendly robot, who helps to keep the planey tidy.  The six winners then each took their whole class to a special screening of the latest Disney blockbuster Wall.E.

The competition, organised by Braintree District Council, was open to all 54 primary schools in the Braintree District, 610 children took part and one winning drawing was chosen from each of the six year groups.  The judging panel included Cllrs Wendy Schmitt and Robert Mitchell, Paul Douglas - Manager at Cineworld and Patrick Keeble from Florida Coaches.

Cabinet member Councillor Wedny Schmitt believes young children can play an important part in keeping our communities tidy, "you can see from the drawings that the children really care about their environment, the pictures are just brimming with enthusiasm and inventiveness.  The competition has encouraged the children to think about how litter and recylcing affects the planet and helped them to start thinking about what they can do to protect it."

The winners are:

Daniel, Gosfield Community Primary School Year 1 (aged 5 - 6)

Amaya, Bocking Church Street Primary School Year 2 (aged 6 - 7)

Isobel, White Notley Primary School Year 3 (aged 7 - 8)

Lucy, Cressing Primary School Year 4 (aged 8 - 9)

Callum, Cressing Primary School Year 5 (aged 9 - 10)

Georgia, Notley Green Primary School Year 6 (aged 10 - 11)

Schools on trial

School Recycling Trial

Working in partnership with 22 of local schools on a Schools Recycling Collection trial, which will run for a year (ending February 2009).  The trial allows us to obtain valuable information and feedback to see if we are able to offer the service to the remaining schools throughout the District.

The participating schools are given blue and green boxes for their classrooms so pupils and teachers alike can recycle paper, card, plastic packaging, metal tins and cans.

The trial is part of a education programme, which includes talks and lesson plans about recycling.  Some of the materials collected will be used to explain to children how to close the recycling loop.  The new facilities will also help to encourage children to recycle outside their home environment.
