Food Inspections *

How often are premises inspected?

We routinely inspect all food premises in the district to ensure that they are clean and hygienic. The frequency with which a premises is inspected depends on the level of risk posed by the food business. Each premises is given a risk score every time it is inspected. High risk premises are inspected at least every six months. There is a sliding scale for all other premises ranging from being inspected every one to every three years.

How do Braintree District food premises fare?

The standards within most food premises in the district are very good. However, we also inspect food premises following complaints made by the public. Where conditions are below standard we can take a number of measures. This can range from giving advice to the person operating the food business right through to prosecuting them in the courts.

We now have a food hygieneratings system (scores on the doors) which awards catering and other food premises a star rating of between 0-5 stars based on the last food hygiene inspection.  You can check the ratings of your favourite restaurant at scoresonthedoors

5 star premises are those with excellent food hygiene standards.
