What We Do
The Environmental Health Section of the Environmental Services Department is broadly split into 5 teams to deal with the extremely varied responsibilities within its domain.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 
The Team deals with air quality, noise nuisance, contaminated land, litter, stray dogs, dog fouling and dog barking. 

HEALTH PROTECTION
The Team is split between two functions, Food Safety & Health & Safety. Food Officers inspect food businesses to ensure that they are complying with food safety legislation, investigate complaints about food and premises, and food poisoning. They also provide food safety training, advice to new business operators and register food businesses. The Health & Safety Officers inspect businesses to ensure that they are complying with health and safety legislation, investigate accidents at work and health & safety in the workplace.

PUBLIC HEALTH AND HOUSING
The Team deals with administering grant money to improve housing conditions, inspect domestic housing to ensure healthy conditions. Deal with drainage complaints, animal welfare issues and pest control.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
The Team undertake Civil Engineering design and project management. Land Drainage statutory duties including Flooding reduction in partnership with Essex County Council and Environment Agency , and maintain Foul and surface water sewers for Housing.

LICENSING TEAM
This Team are responsible for making sure that the Council meets its obligations under the various elements of legislation to Licence, permit register, persons, premises and or vehicles to maintain public safety.
As part of their role the team issue the following types of licence/ permit etc to control the following activities;
(i)   Licences under the Licensing Act 2003- regulating the sale of alcohol and the provision of certain types of entertainment.
(ii)  Licences for the provision of Hackney Carriage & Private Hire vehicles and their drivers.
(iii) Consents to allow Street Trading.
(iv)  Licence gambling activities such as Betting shops, Gaming and Lotteries.
(v)   Licences Charitable Collections.
(vi)  Licence Sex Shops.
(vii) Licence Motor Salvage Operators
