Under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 the keeping of certain
animals and reptiles which are defined as " dangerous" requires a
licence from the Council.
The list of animals and reptiles covered is quite extensive
therefore you should contact the Environmental Services
Department for further details
Very strict rules apply to the housing and welfare of the
animals and with all licence applications a veterinary officers
report will be required. Anyone keeping an animal without a licence
risks prosecution and confiscation of the animal.( There are
certain exemptions for animals kept in a zoo, circus, licensed pet
shop or registered scientific establishment.
An inspection ,usually jointly with a veterinary officer and
Environmental Health Officer, is made the following items will be
considered ;
- Public interest in relation to safety, nuisance or
otherwise.
· That the proposed accommodation is suitable and secure.
· That the welfare provisions relating to food, bedding drink etc
are adequate.
· That the animal is protected in case of emergencies such as fire
etc.
· All reasonable precautions are taken to minimise the spread of
disease.
· That adequate exercise facilities are provided ( if
appropriate).
· That adequate liability insurance is held.
· That a register of all animals held and moved is kept.
