The deadline for registering to vote in the May
Referendum/Local Elections has now passed.
____________________________________________________________________________
Each year between August and November electoral registration forms
are sent to every property as part of the annual canvass. The
purpose of this is to collect information required by law to
publish the register of electors, which comes into force on the 1st
December annually.
If your name is not included on the register and an election is
called you will not be allowed to vote.
The revised register is published on 1st December annually,
however if you discover you have been missed
off you can apply at any time to be included on prescribed
monthly dates. If you have moved house either within the District
or from another Council area you will need to register again by
completing a new voter registration form for each person
aged 18 or over.
Registering for Council Tax does not automatically
register you on the electoral register.
About the Register
The register is published in two versions, a Full version and an
Edited version. The Law requires that everyone who is aged 18 and
over appears on the Full register, however you may opt out of the
Edited register.
Full Register
The full register may only be used for Election purposes, credit
reference agencies and banks. Each organisation operates under
licence and is required to adhere to strict data protection
legislation. The register can be viewed by anyone requesting to do
so at the Council Offices.
Edited Register
The edited version is available to anyone and copies can be
purchased from the Council. When registering everyone is given the
opportunity to opt out of the edited version in this way tour
details will be kept private and NOT be made available for general
sale. To do this you simply need to tick the appropriate box on the
registration forms.
