Wethersfield

Wethersfield is a village with a long history and has many Listed buildings. It probably gets its name from a Viking invader named Wuthha or Wotha, whose 'field' or clearing it was.  The village green is at the centre of the village with several plane trees towering above.

There are close associations locally with the United States.  People from Wethersfield were amongst those emigrating from this country to New England at the time of the Pilgrim Fathers. There was a turnaround from 1941 to 1946 USAF, when personnel arrived from the United States to set up at RAF Wethersfield, an airbase on the northern edge of the village.  The base is now occupied by the British Ministry of Defence police whose main job is to guard military establishments throughout the UK.
