The parishes of Belchamp St Paul and Belchamp Otten are situated in the north of the district in the picturesque Stour Valley on the Suffolk/Essex border.  The Belchamps were mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Belchamp St Paul has a school, a church, two public houses and a reed thatched Community House.

Belchamp Otten has a church and one public house.  The village is surrounded by fields.  In fact Belchamp is possibly derived from the Norman ‘Belle Champs’, that is, beautiful fields or meadows.  This landscape and the ancient villages have inspired such famous artists as John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough.
