The parish of Gestingthorpe is situated to the north east of Braintree.  It has a fine village hall and the church of St Mary’s displays a memorial wall tablet to Captain Oates, who gallantly died on the return journey of the Scott Antarctic expedition.

According to the 2001 Census, the parish of Gestingthorpe had a population of 421.
