The parish of Castle Hedingham is to the north of Braintree and as its name implies has a castle or stone keep built by Aubrey de Vere around 1140 which is well preserved to this day.

The keep sits atop a high earth ringwork with an adjacent inner bailey, now occupied by an 18th Century country mansion.

Many beautiful buildings from mediaeval and tudor periods survive within the village.
