Halstead is a traditional market town situated seven miles north of Braintree. 

The town has grown steadily with a population of over 11,000.  Local facilities include schools, medical centre and hospital, wide variety of shops, a local theatre, a market held on Fridays and Saturdays, leisure centre and swimming pool.
