Our Income - The money we receive

*

Where the money comes from

coins

Our income to fund the Council’s net expenditure in 2010/11 was £19.593 million. Around 45% of our income is collected from council tax with the remainder coming from central government through grants and the redistribution of business rates.

Keeping Council Tax low

In our drive to deliver value for money, we were determined to keep the year’s council tax increase low - and achieved this at just 2.5%. This meant raising the average band D tax by just 8p a week.

Chart

The chart demonstrates how the average council tax of £1,479.70, collected by us on behalf of Essex County Council, Essex Police, Essex Fire Authority and the town and parish councils, is allocated.

We are pleased to report that we collected over 98% of our council tax and business rates in 2010/11 - an excellent performance against a background of recession.
