Welcome to the Community Safety Homepage

The Community Safety team is a small team of Braintree District Council Officers specialising in community safety work with a variety of partners across the Braintree District.  The Braintree District is a LOW LEVEL CRIME AREA with crime statistics per 1000 residents well below similar Local Authorities as defined by the Home Office Community Safety Partnership family grouping.

Anti-Social Behaviour Update August 2011

For the year April 2010-March 2011 there were a total of 5277 reported incidents of Anti Social Behaviour for the whole of the Braintree district.  This equates to a total reduction of 356 reported incidents from the previous year; equivalent to a 6.3% reduction in ASB across the district
The achievement in the continuing addressing and reduction in ASB is due to the extremely close partnership working of the Braintree District Community Safety Partnership.  In particular, the seamless working between Essex Police and Braintree District Council ASB teams.

The annual CSP initiatives that involve work of Prevention, Education and Enforcement Activity are as follows:-

Reality Roadshow – Year 9 Project on ASB delivered in Schools.  Annually approximately 1500 students attend the interact event.

Crucial Crew – Year 6 Project on Safety.  All Year 6 pupils across the District attend the event.   Annually approximately 1700 students attend the interact event.

Being Safe project – Year 8 Project on ASB, Racism, Homophobia, and TKAP (Tackling Knife Action Programme).  Delivered in Schools (one day per school). Annually approximately 1500 students attend the interact event.

All school initiatives form part of the schools curriculum under PHSE (Citizenship Curriculum)

Outreach ASB Initiatives

Dispersal Orders (used only as a last resort when all other problem solving and agency intervention is exhausted) – There has been two Dispersal Orders in the Braintree District the first in Sible Hedingham in 2006 due to ASB problems in the High Street and the second at Freeport Leisure and Retail Complex, Braintree in 2009 due to ASB as a result of vehicle nuisance.  Both orders were a success in combating the ASB and the input from partner agencies was essential to the success of both initiatives.

Education and proactive work undertaken by numerous agencies is part of the programme for the Dispersal Order.

Use of ASB legislation – especially Acceptable Behaviour Contracts & Anti-Social Behaviour Orders.

ASB network of Officers in place to discuss cases – includes Schools, Housing Associations, ECC etc.  Led by BDC ASB Officers in partnership with Essex Police ASB Officers.
