Whilst we need to encourage and support people who wish to
collect for charity there is a need to protect the community from
bogus collectors taking advantage of people's generosity. That is
why it is important that before you start collecting money for a
charity you check with the Council to see if you need a permit.
How much does a permit cost?
Nothing, they are free.
Can I collect anywhere?
For the purpose of Street Collections we have divided the
district into areas and only issue permits to one charity a day in
any particular area to give each charity the chance to get the
maximum and also to ensure that the Public aren't harassed by more
than one collector.
You must obtain permission before collecting from the landowner
as well as the Council, even if that land is a public-access area,
but privately owned eg; George Yard, Braintree; Tofts Walk,
Braintree (Sainsbury's), The Grove Shopping Centre and Newland
Precinct, Witham
Are the times between which I can collect
restricted?
Generally no, but in the weeks running up to Christmas we limit
a charity to either a.m. or p.m. again to give each Charity equal
opportunity.
How long does it take to get a permit?
Applications should be made to the Council at least one month
prior to the proposed collection date so that we have adequate time
to carry out the appropriate checks. Applications are not accepted
more than six months in advance.
