Registration is required when an organisation wishes to sell tickets before and on a specific day to raise funds.

What events are covered by a lottery registration?

If you are holding a raffle and are selling pre-printed tickets before the date of the draw a registration is required. If you are only selling cloakroom tickets on the day then no registration is needed.

Duck races and balloon races also need a lottery registration.

Am I restricted to the number of events?

No. Once you have registered then you can hold as many events in any year that the registration is valid. Registrations run from 1st January to 31st December.

Can I sell the tickets anywhere?

No. Tickets cannot be sold in the street. They must be sold in a booth or shop set aside specifically for the purpose of selling tickets.

Are there limits on the price I can charge for a ticket?

Yes. The most that mat be charged for a ticket under the lotteries permit is £2.00

Is there a limit to the amount I can pay out in prize money?

Yes. Where the total value of tickets or chances to be sold is £20,000 or less the total value of prizes, which may be offered may not exceed 50% of the proceeds of the lottery.
