Do You Need A Premises Licence? *

This page of basic questions and answers has been designed to help you decide if you need a premises licence or need to issue a temporary events Notice. However, alcohol, entertainment and late night refreshment licensing is a complicated subject so if you are not sure whether you need a licence please contact the Licensing Officer for further advice.

1 Will you be providing entertainment (plays, films, music, dance, sports etc) open to the general public or for consideration with a view to profit?
Yes - Go to question 2

No - Go to question 30

2 Will you be performing a play (including rehearsals)?
Yes - Go to question 17

No - Go to question 3

3 Will you be showing films or video?

Yes - Go to question 4

No - Go to question 6

4 Will the showing be solely to demonstrate a product, advertise goods, provide information, education or instruction?
Yes - Go to question 6

No - Go to question 5

5 Will it be part of a museum or art gallery exhibit?
Yes - Go to question 6

No - Go to question 16

6 Does the activity include boxing, wrestling, indoor sport?
Yes - Go to question 16

No - Go to question 7

7 Does the activity include dance?
Yes - Go to question 16

8 Does the activity include live or recorded music?

9 Is the music purely incidental to the main entertainment?
Yes - Go to question 30

10 Will you be selling or supplying alcohol?

No - You do not require a premises licence.

11 Is the alcohol solely for a raffle, tombola etc. prize?

12  Are any of the proceeds for private gain?

44 Have 12 temporary event Notice's already been served relating to the premises in the current year (by anybody)?
Yes - You require a premises licence

45 Will the event and any others in the current year for which temporary event Notice's have been given exceed 15 days in total?
Yes - You require a premises licence

No - You must issue a temporary events notice or apply for a premises licence
