The Economic Development Strategy (click to open -
PDF) has been published. Facing up to the
challenges of the current and future economic situation, the
strategy outlines a new approach on behalf of businesses and
residents in the Braintree District.
Steered and developed by several local business-led working
groups meeting through the winter, the 56 page document can be seen
on the Council’s web site or at local libraries.
It picks up where previous consultation left off; developing the
preferred vision of the district: ‘where ideas take shape’: and
rejecting the do nothing option.
Five priorities emerge: including the improvement of
local skills attainment in a competitive local economy which is an
international leader, rather than a follower. The district must
become a leader in environmental technology and entrepreneurial
spirit.
Cabinet member for enterprise, Cllr Nigel Harley
comments: "We recognise that growth in jobs must be balanced
with protecting the environment and we need to reconsider how
wealth is created, while maintaining a good quality of life for
everyone. The district needs more sustainable employment and we
need to regain the idea that the more you learn, the more you earn
– something which seems to have been lost for many young
people."

Braintree District Council is committed to quality in all aspects
of its operation. We are recognised as a leading authority in the
country for excellence in the provision of public services, in fact
we have a excellent reputation for "getting things done". So, as
you would expect creating an environment for success is a priority
for the Council. Achieving it is something that has involved
building a close working partnership with local business as well as
other organisations.
The District offers many opportunities for business to expand,
relocate or invest. Innovative commercial and industrial
development have helped create a dynamic environment and the
district continues to attract new business and investment.
