Transsexualism affects an estimated 5,000 people in the
UK. Medical treatment to enable transsexual people to alter
their bodies to match their gender identity is highly
successful. The process is known medically as gender
reassignment. The Sex Discrimination Act (SDA) was amended in
May 1999 to protect transsexual people against discrimination in
employment and vocational training.

Combating Transphobic Bullying Guidance for
Schools
During the past decade, transgender issues have become a major
feature of diversity programmes throughout the public
services. Their present prominence results from continuing
rapid growth in the number of transgender people, even as young as
two, who are revealing gender variance.
Despite the enactment of supportive legislation, transgender
people still expericence discrimination in education, in the
workplace and in society generally. It causes stress for
youngsters and their families. This alone, would impair the
young person's achievements at school. Bullying gravely
aggravates the impairment.
